Sanctuary
The characters seek to escape from a superficially utopian society to “sanctuary.” For them, their “sanctuary” is an actual place — the meaning of and the yearning for sanctuary has been transformed into a projection upon the actual world. Throughout the film the characters struggle with their poignant need that sanctuary be a real place, which becomes increasingly difficult to believe as they discover that the world beyond their closed utopian/dystopian world is not as they had once imagined it would be.
The illusion of a single vision of the two halves as a single self or unit produces a limited view of the inner and outer reality, but when they are integrated, it enhances human consciousness and self awareness in the individual being more responsive to one's surroundings and powering perception. So, it is important to maintain sense of continuity and coherence of self experience attained during life time and while passing through the doors of death. This kind of “reunion” or alchemy of the different souls after death, could be considered as a transmutation to an angelical immortal being. Here the importance of collecting these parts of the self and reintegrating them back into one’s present psyche (Legend od Osiris).
‘When you make the two one,
and when you make
the inside like the outside,
and the outside like the inside,
the above like the below…
then, you will be ready
to enter the Kingdom’
What we see outside is a reflection or mirror of our interior, of the conscious “Being”. And what we project onto it inevitably reverts to the experience we will have throughout our lives and the way we perceive it through the emotions (unconscious) and actions we perform in each situation. Because what our senses capture as a result of the interaction with the environment, is ultimately part of ourselves. The sense of division between the outside and inside, it’s just an illusion of our mind. Being loving and compassionate towards others is being so towards ourselves.
The ancient Gnosticism insisted that genuine truth cannot be discovered by valuing one polarity above the another (duality), “but instead by making the two one”. We unite ourselves by acting the same on the outside from the way we feel on the inside, in accordance with our outer actions what our inner soul urges us to do.
